The Wound Care Program at TNC is supervised by the on-site wound care physician. Individualized treatment plans, wound management and frequent reassessment assure effective and timely healing. Our goal is to promote wound healing while managing other illnesses and encouraging participation in therapies to maximize outcomes and help patients return home. Wound care services are offered on an inpatient and outpatient basis.

Daily physician-directed program with “hands on” thorough wound evaluation and patient care (24-hour care provided between nursing and interdisciplinary wound team)
Wound Care Team includes: Physician, certified as a Wound Care Specialist, physical therapist, certified as a wound specialist and ostomy management specialist; wound and ostomy certified nurses and patient care technicians
Evaluation and modification of environmental factors that may impact wound healing
Implementing individualized specialty equipment that reduces pressure while sitting and lying
Monitoring of nutritional status with appropriate intervention and supplementation to maximize healing potential
Monitoring glucose and controlling overall metabolic state to facilitate wound healing
Use of specialized wound dressings and therapies including NPWT and advanced biologics when indicated
Collaboration with patient’s medical team and referring providers
Patient and family education regarding self-care and wound prevention

Dr. Norman ‘Chip’ Whisenant, D.O.
Dr. Norman ‘Chip’ Whisenant, a full-time, on-site physician has directed the Wound Care Program since 1999. He coordinates the interdisciplinary care team and has extensive experience in the use of wound care dressings, negative pressure assisted wound care and excisional sharp debridement.
Dr. Whisenant completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and is a certified Wound Care Specialist.
“Lucrecia “Rhonda” Leighton RN, WCC, OM
Lucrecia Leighton is a registered nurse, wound care certified and a certified Ostomy Management Specialist. She joined the team in 2013.
